Is a radiant barrier worth it in Texas?

For many North Texas homes, yes. In a hot climate, much of the heat in an attic comes through the roof, and a radiant barrier reflects that heat away. The Department of Energy estimates that a radiant barrier can reduce cooling costs by roughly five to ten percent in a hot climate, with more benefit when air conditioning ducts run through the attic. It works best together with attic insulation.

What a radiant barrier does

A radiant barrier is a reflective material, usually aluminum foil on a backing, installed under the roof deck or across the rafters in the attic. When the sun heats the roof, the barrier reflects much of that heat away before it warms the attic.

Insulation works differently. It slows the heat already in the attic from moving through the ceiling into your home. A radiant barrier and insulation do different jobs, and they work well together.

Which homes benefit most

Homes in hot climates benefit the most, especially when the air conditioning ducts run through the attic. A cooler attic means the cold air in those ducts stays cooler on its way to your rooms. Homes with large roof areas facing south or west can also see more benefit.

When to install one

A radiant barrier can be installed on an existing home from inside the attic, or as part of a new roof. Good attic ventilation helps a radiant barrier work properly, so it is worth checking your ventilation at the same time.

Radiant barrier coatings are generally less reflective than foil products.

Will a radiant barrier affect my cell or wifi signal?
